JOB SUMMARY: On a consultative basis, act as GIS technician and provide technical support to the Map and Geospatial Information Collection. Provide support to faculty and students in the use of GIS in research and study; assist patrons with GIS related queries, determining type and level of assistance required; instruct patrons in the use of various types of electronic databases, PCs and related equipment, geomatics technologies and geospatial and numeric data; maintain knowledge of available resources in order to advise patrons in selecting appropriate tools for their research/project needs. Present tutorials and/or modules in Geographic Information Systems, ArcGIS Desktop. Provide basic maintenance to public/staff geomatics computer stations. Perform further related duties. Position reports to the Director GIS Centre/Map Curator.
NOTE: This is a temporary backfill position for a pregnancy/parental leave replacement for approximately seven (7) months.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Undergraduate degree with relevant subject emphasis, such as geography, earth sciences or environmental sciences (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Experience with ArcGIS Desktop (and extensions), PCI Geomatica, and IDRISI required. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and troubleshooting skills required. Incumbent should have the ability to instruct and advise other on principles and capabilities of GIS for teaching and research matters. Experience in a client service environment would be an asset.
