Staffing Services serves a major role in the employment process that links the University with both its external and internal communities. Staffing Services is a centralized function within a decentralized structure and provides staffing assistance to all levels in the University that are involved in recruiting and hiring for non-academic positions.
Staffing Services provides professional assistance to departments in their search for appropriate staff to fill vacancies and to job candidates searching for appropriate employment. Staffing endeavours to foster positive University/community relations and positive intra-University relations in the area of employment.
The Staffing Services mandate includes ensuring that fair and equitable employment processes are understood and adhered to as set out in the University's collective agreements, policies, and government legislation, such as the Human Rights Act and Human Resources Development Canada regulations.
Who We Are
Angela MacMaster, Manager (recruiting, hiring, redeployment, career management)
Josh MacIntyre, Staffing Advisor (staffing procedures and systems)
Staffing Services is located in Room 21 on the lower level of the Henry Hicks Academic Administration Building. Our street address is 6299 South Street, although the building is not situated directly at street level. The building has a clock tower on the top, almost at the corner of South and Oxford Streets in Halifax. The bright green of the soccer field on South Street is a good landmark to watch for unless it is covered with snow!

Some of the Services Offered by Staffing Services
Lay-off, Redeployment, and Recall
Provisions for NSGEU employees are contained in Article 11 of the NSGEU Collective Agreement. The employing Department should contact the Coordinator, Staff Relations at 1958, if they are considering a lay-off. Guidelines for minimum notice requirements are outlined. Special provisions are necessary for employees with ten (10) or more years' service (notification, severance pay option). All NSGEU vacancies shall be reviewed and postings selectively suspended in those instances where an employee who has been given notice of lay-off appears to be qualified to fill the position. These employees shall be given priority consideration for a period of up to twelve (12) months following her/his last day of work as determined in the lay-off notice, unless s/he successfully relocates to another position.
Severance Pay
A NSGEU employee with ten years seniority may opt for severance unless an offer of alternative employment at the same or higher classification has been made or is pending. An employee electing this option shall notify the Coordinator, Staff Relations, at least one week before the expiry date of the lay-off notice. Severance pay shall be one (1) week of pay for every one year of full-time or pro-rated equivalent paid service since date of the last hire by the Employer.
Temporary Employment
Employees on recall with suitable backgrounds will be referred to Supertemp Temporary Services for priority placement within the Dalhousie community if they so desire.
